Tongue suspension is a
procedure that is useful in the treatment of difficult cases with obstructive
sleep apnea. If patients have
severe sleep apnea and basic tongue enlargement and collapse the traditional
surgical approaches have a 10% or less chance of success. The addition of the tongue suspension procedure has greatly
improved these results. The tongue
suspension procedure involves the placement of a very tiny screw in the
posterior portion of the mandible of the jaw bone and the placement of a soft
suture through the substance of the tongue.
This is meant to prevent collapse of the tongue and adds only moderately
to the pain and discomfort of the traditional procedures.
