The most common nasal symptoms include nasal
obstruction/congestion, rhinorrhea (runny nose), and decreased sense of
smell.
Nasal obstruction can be due to deviation of the nasal
septum, which is most effectively treated with a surgical procedure called
septoplasty. Obstruction may also be caused by hypertrophy of the nasal
turbinates which are normal structures within the nose that serve to warm
and humidify air before it reaches the lungs. Turbinate hypertrophy may
result from uncontrolled allergies as well as long-term use of nasal
decongestants. Surgical reduction of the turbinates is an effective
treatment for this condition when medical treatment fails.
Rhinorrhea is often associated with allergies.
The use of topical nasal steroids as well as oral antihistamines can help
alleviate this problem. |
