Acute Tonsilitis/Pharyngitis

This can be an acute bacterial or viral infection of the tonsils or throat.  Bacterial infections require antibiotic therapy where as viral infections do not respond to antibiotics and usually resolve spontaneously.  Patients with frequent tonsil infections, especially children, may benefit from removal of the tonsils.
